What is a Bridge?

Six Unit Anterior Bridge A bridge is a method of replacing one or several natural teeth. Two or more teeth on either side of the missing tooth(teeth) are chosen as the bridge support - the abutments. These are then prepared and the bridge is permanently fixed to the adjacent teeth (see the six unit bridge on the right - porcelain CAPTEK type bridge). The dentist will begin by preparing the natural teeth which will eventually support this bridge.

Three Unit Gold Bridge From impressions of the mouth, a dentist will have the bridge fabricated and will then install and cement it on the teeth in the mouth which have already been prepared. This very solid prosthesis can last several years with good professional and personal care. The picture on the left is a three unit gold bridge, suitable for back teeth.
