How is it done?

The placement of a crown or bridge requires at least two working sessions. The steps are the same, but more than one tooth is usually prepared when a bridge is planned.

  • First Appointment
At the first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth by grinding down tooth structure. This makes space for the crown which will take the place of the tooth structure removed. Then an impression of the tooth and the surrounding teeth are taken. An impression of the lower teeth may also be taken. The impression includes the surrounding teeth as well, in order to assure that the final crown is perfectly adjusted in the mouth. A temporary crown is then made (remember the tooth has been ground down!) and cemented in place.
  • Second Appointment
In about a week you will have to see your dentist again. He/She will remove the temporary crown and verify the fit, form and colour of the permanent crown. If everything is just how it is supposed to be, the crown will then be cemented in place. This will restore both the function and appearance of the treated tooth.
