Why MicroDentistry?Since the introduction of fluoridation, the incidence of outwardly detectable decay has dramatically reduced, and because of the strengthening that fluoride causes in the enamel, (the outer layer of the tooth), the pattern of decay has changed. Rather than large areas of tooth surface succumbing to the attack of plaque acid, decay now appears as small discreet areas, often undetectable to the dental probe, yet visible as a colour change inside the tooth or using magnification aided by the use of an intra-oral video camera that can enlarge the image of a single tooth to the size of a TV screen. Dentists have observed this change, continuing to develop a science based on prevention and protection and the continuing miniaturization of all treatment procedures. In conjunction, there has been the development of new filling and restorative materials and techniques.
